Jonathan Hutchins

Jonathan Hutchins is an international finance lawyer and investment professional with three decades of experience across the international development sector. He has extensive experience with development finance, commercial deal structuring, and contract negotiation, and has worked with a wide range of international institutions and organisations, predominantly focused in low- and middle-income countries.

Jonathan is passionate about advancing innovative approaches to development challenges, deploying his specialist skills in financial law, private equity investment, debt, and risk capital to create innovative tools and approaches that deliver impact. He has deep experience establishing and growing impact-driven businesses, building new teams from scratch, and providing support to development finance and infrastructure investors and facilitators in emerging markets.

Jonathan is MedAccess’ General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, and serves as Company Secretary. He is responsible for overseeing the organisation’s legal function, financial and market-shaping transactions, and operational activities. Joining MedAccess in 2018, shortly after its inception, Jonathan has played an integral role in establishing and developing MedAccess’ structure and he oversees the management of all operational systems and processes. Jonathan is responsible for the structuring and execution of MedAccess’ innovative finance transactions, creating multi-partner bespoke agreements that support the introduction and availability of health products into new markets at affordable prices to address urgent needs.

Prior to MedAccess, Jonathan was a legal consultant for International Finance Corporation (IFC) InfraVentures, a $150m fund supporting the development of public private partnerships, private infrastructure projects and businesses in developing countries. In this role, Jonathan supported InfraVentures to provide early-stage risk capital and development expertise for commercially viable infrastructure projects, as well as the provision of seed capital for other innovative start-up businesses and collaboration with governments to design and launch public-private partnerships in the infrastructure sector. IFC is part of the World Bank Group.

Jonathan was a founder of international power company Globeleq, which was formed to provide capital for power generation in low- and middle-income countries. He spent five years based in Houston as General Counsel as Globeleq became the fastest-growing power company in that space, acquiring or developing interests in 23 power generation projects in South America, Africa and Asia and growing from less than a dozen staff to over 2,000 employees worldwide. Jonathan returned to London with Actis in 2007 as Director and COO for Actis’ first energy fund.

Jonathan trained and qualified as an international project finance lawyer at Clifford Chance, before moving to CDC Group to provide legal support for private equity, debt, and infrastructure investment teams. He also served as the first interim General Counsel for NSIA (Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority), working in Abuja with the Nigerian Government and Adam Smith International to establish Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, to provide and catalyse infrastructure finance and development.

Jonathan read history at Durham University and took his CPE and LSF at the University of Law. He holds Masters Degrees in International Relations from University of Cambridge and in Strategy and Leadership with the Sloan Fellowship at London Business School.
